Claude Sonnet 4.6 Is Here — Opus-Level Performance at Sonnet Pricing
Anthropic just released Claude Sonnet 4.6 on February 17, and it's a big deal. This isn't an incremental update — it's a full upgrade across coding, computer use, long-context reasoning, agent planning, and knowledge work. And it's now the default model on claude.ai for all users, including the free tier.
Why should you care?
The short version: you're now getting near-Opus intelligence at Sonnet prices. That's $3/M input tokens and $15/M output tokens — unchanged from Sonnet 4.5.
In internal testing, developers preferred Sonnet 4.6 over Sonnet 4.5 about 70% of the time. Even more telling: they preferred it over Claude Opus 4.5 (the previous top-tier model) 59% of the time. Less overengineering, fewer hallucinations, better instruction following, and more consistent follow-through on multi-step tasks.
What stands out
- Computer use has reached human-level baseline on OSWorld benchmarks — the model can navigate spreadsheets, fill multi-step web forms, and work across browser tabs like a person would.
- 1M token context window (beta) — load entire codebases, contracts, or research papers in a single request, with effective reasoning across the full context.
- Agentic planning — in the Vending-Bench Arena simulation, Sonnet 4.6 autonomously developed a two-phase business strategy that outperformed both Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.5.
- Frontend design and coding — multiple early customers independently described the visual outputs as noticeably more polished, with fewer iteration rounds needed.
Platform updates
The release also comes with API improvements: web search and fetch tools now auto-filter results with code execution, code execution and memory tools are now GA, and Claude in Excel now supports MCP connectors for pulling data from external sources like S&P Global, PitchBook, and FactSet.
Our take
For automation builders and SMEs, this changes the cost calculation significantly. Tasks that previously required Opus (and its higher pricing) can now be handled by Sonnet 4.6 at a fraction of the cost. Combined with computer use capabilities and MCP integrations, this is one of the most practical AI model releases we've seen.
